Rick Lyon joined the firm in 2009.
After law school, Rick joined Irell & Manella as a member of its litigation and intellectual property litigation practice groups.
Rick's practice at Irell focused largely on patent litigation. Rick's cases included:
TiVo Inc. v. EchoStar Communications, Inc.: Represented TiVo in a patent infringement lawsuit involving digital video recorders.
After a two-week trial, the jury found all of TiVo’s asserted claims to be valid and infringed and awarded TiVo $74 million in damages.
The Federal Circuit affirmed the judgment, including the full damages award and the injunction. EchoStar has paid TiVo more than $100 million
in connection with the judgment.
Forterra Systems, Inc. v. IMVU, Inc.: Represented IMVU in a patent infringement case involving three-dimensional multi-user internet
chat technology. Concurrently prepared Inter Partes Reexamination filed on behalf of IMVU, where the Patent Office issued a non-final Office Action
invalidating all of Forterra’s patent claims asserted in the litigation. The case settled successfully for IMVU.
MedImmune, Inc. v. Genentech and City of Hope: Represented City of Hope in a patent lawsuit filed by MedImmune seeking to invalidate a
biotechnology patent owned by Genentech and City of Hope. The case settled successfully for City of Hope.
